Description/characteristics: Unless otherwise specified in the monograph, the test shall be carried out by placing about 1gm/1ml of the powder substance being examined on a sheet of white paper or in petri dish placed on white paper and 1ml of the liquid substance being examined in petri dish placed on white paper.
Odor: Where a substance is described as “odorless”, the following method of examination is applies. Examine a sample of not more than 25 gm immediately after opening the package. If any odor is noticeable, transfer the sample rapidly to an open container and re-examine after 15 minutes. If the odor is still discernible, the sample does not comply with the description ‘odorless’.
Taste: Statements on taste are provided only in cases where the property is a guide to the acceptability of the material (for example, a substance used primarily for flavoring) this test shall be done in the presence of the Lab In-charge only.
Color: Statements on color are provided only in cases where the property is a guide to the acceptability of the material (for example, white to off-white or red to clear colorless, brown powders, white tablets, red-black shell), check visually and report.
Shape: Statements on shape are provided only in cases where this property is a guide to the acceptability of the material especially for the solid dosage forms i.e Tablets, capsules ( for example, Round, bi-convex, oval circular, beveled, triangular, rectangular etc. it may indicate break line, symbol or another marking plain, engraved or embossed on the surface), check visually and report.
Special Characteristics: Statements on special characters are provided only in cases where this property is a guide to the acceptability of the material especially for solid dosage forms i.e Tablets, capsules (for example, uncoated tablets, coated tablets, film-coated tablets, enteric-coated tablets, Lubricating coated capsules for suppositories, Hard gelatin capsules, soft gelatin capsules, special shaped tablets or capsules etc.), visually check the sample for special characteristic and report.
