PURPOSE
To lay down the procedure for the description of materials.
APPARATUS
- Clean and dry Petri dish or watch glass
- Clean and dry 50 ml Nessler’s cylinder.
REAGENTS
Not applicable.
PROCEDURE
For Solids:
- Spread evenly about 1 to 2 g of the solid sample in a Petri dish or in a watch glass. Observe the following in diffuse daylight against a white background.
- The nature of the substance [powder, crystalline etc.,]
- The color of the substance.
- Any extraneous matter present.
- Any lumps or non-homogeneity.
- In the case of tablets observe for shape, color, score, and embossment, if any.
- In the case of capsules observe for capsule size, the color of the capsule shell, and the color of the filling material.
For Liquids:
- Transfer 10 to 25 ml of the liquid to a dry Nessler’s cylinder. Observe the following in diffuse daylight against a white background.
- Color of the liquid.
- Clarity of the liquid.
- Any characteristic odor perceived during handling.
- Settlement of any extraneous matter on standing.
- In the case of oral solutions observe for clarity, the color of the solution, and also for sedimentation, if any.
- In the case of oral suspensions observe for color and sedimentation, if any.
